Author Jamie Russell has written an entertaining and insightful history of the zombie film. Beginning with the old classics like White Zombie and I Walked With A Zombie, Russell provides perhaps the most comprehensive overview that we will ever get.

It’s all here — from George Romero’s famed Dead films to the Italian gore cycle to the various straight-to-video zombie flicks of the late ’80s and early ’90s to the genre’s resurgence with Resident Evil and Romero’s Land of the Dead. Along with providing a wealth of information about the men who made these films, Russell also analyzes the various themes running through the key films of the zombie genre. Russell’s comments about Romero’s Living Dead films, Lucio Fulci’s Beyond Trilogy, and Jean Rollin’s The Grapes of Death are especially insightful.

Best of all, the book ends with 76-page “Zombie Filmography” in which Russell provides a capsule description and review of seemingly every zombie film (regardless of how obscure or celebrated) ever made.

The dead are rising, and are attacking the last remaining living people. Businesses and residences that have not yet been overrun by the hordes of ghouls are being ransacked by looters. A small group of survivors from the countryside seek shelter and supplies at a large superstore just outside the city limits. They must use every resource available to be able to survive against marauders…the living and the dead.

This is a real action novel. If you love zombies and stories about the end of the world like me, then you’ll really enjoy this book. It is very well-written and is a fun read. I am a big fan of zombie movies, especially those of George Romero. This book really did a great job of recapturing the Romero feel in a modern way.

The end begins with a viral outbreak unlike anything mankind has ever encountered before. The infected are subject to delirium, fever, a dramatic increase in violent behavior, and a one-hundred percent mortality rate.

Death.

But it doesn’t end there. The victims return from death to walk the earth.

When a massive military operation fails to contain the plague of the living dead it escalates into a global pandemic. In one fell swoop, the necessities of life become much more basic. Gone are petty everyday concerns. Gone are the amenities of civilized life.

Yet a single law of nature remains: Live, or die. Kill, or be killed.

On one side of the world, a battle-hardened General surveys the remnants of his command: a young medic, a veteran photographer, a brash Private, and dozens of refugees, all are his responsibility-all thousands of miles from home. Back in the United States, an Army Colonel discovers the darker side of Morningstar virus and begins to collaborate with a well-known journalist to leak the information to the public…

This is a great read – even for those who typically don’t read the zombie-genre (like myself). A real page-turner from the start – Frater kept me guessing from beginning to end. “As The World Dies – The First Days” offers several complex lead characters coming from diverse backgrounds; I was able to identify with each and every one of them on a different level. Can’t wait for the second installment!

George Romero’s zombie trilogy – Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead – are such films: grisly, innovative studies in horror that have shocked and entertained millions of viewers. They are rightly ranked among the true classics of modern horror cinema.

In Dawn of the Dead, the ghouls from Night of the Living Dead have returned with an insatiable hunger for human flesh, and a message that haunts the human mind. Young and old, black and white, their former lives forgotten, they fill the streets of our cities and run wild through our shopping centers, consuming everyone and everything they touch with the curse of living death. As four ordinary people take refuge in an overrun shopping mall and arm themselves against the onslaught, Dawn of the Dead becomes more than a bloodbath. In a world where life is a commodity, where survival is bought with guns, and where satisfaction is having free run of a department store, the dead will finally rule us all…
